Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures in Viet Nam: Heading Towards Recognition and Effective In-Situ Conservation Beyond Protected Area

Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) are an important new addition to recognising and supporting biodiversity conservation beyond protected areas. In Viet Nam, the government and other stakeholders are committed to facilitating the recognition of well managed sites that deliver biodiversity conservation. The following summary provides insights into ongoing efforts in Viet Nam on OECM recognition. Lessons learnt from assessing the potential for OECMs in Quang Ninh Province in general and testing the IUCN site-level assessment tool in two sites, are combined with key results from reviewing the institutionalisation and implementation of OECMs in India and Colombia. These inputs are the basis for a proposed road map to recognise, report, monitor and manage OECMs in Viet Nam which was discussed with nearly 100 stakeholders at a national event in December 2023.
